When people picture robots on a jobsite, they imagine something out of a movie: a machine swinging steel, laying brick, doing the heavy lifting on its own. The reality on most sites today is a lot less dramatic, and honestly a lot more useful. A good chunk of jobsite robotics right now is basically very dedicated note-takers. I think that's a good thing, and a recent ASCE article made me appreciate why.

Consistency is the thing humans are worst at and the thing engineering documentation needs most. A person walking a site at 4pm after a long day is going to write a slightly different note than they would have at 9am. A machine doesn't have a bad afternoon. It captures the same fields, the same way, every single time.
Here's why that matters past the jobsite. The reason reporting is painful in this field usually isn't the writing. It's that the inputs are messy. Photos with no labels, field notes in three different formats, observations someone half-remembers a week later. If the data comes in clean and consistent at the source, everything downstream gets easier, including the report that has to summarize it. The robots in this article aren't impressive because they're autonomous. They're useful because they remove the inconsistency that wrecks documentation.
The honest part of the article is that it doesn't oversell. It's careful about the catch: deployment takes planning, you have to time it for an empty site, you need charging and storage, and somebody has to actually compare the robot's cost against a person's.
